Abundant giving - you might be surprised

Holiday season can make us feel like we need to spend money on gifts for those that we love but is our gifting triggering joy or dread?

Generosity is wonderful to share and not only does the recipient of the gift get a buzz, when the gift is given in the true spirit of generosity, the giver also receives a wonderful joy trigger - and that is what life is all about - creating more joy triggers!
We sometimes fall into the trap of thinking that a gift means something wrapped beautifully with ribbon - and who doesn't love receiving a beautifully decorated bundle of anticipation - yet it can also be as simple as smiling at someone.
Our daily life is full of moments for us to give and receive gifts. The definition of a gift is something that is given willingly to someone without payment. It should also be something that is given without any expectation of a future "repayment". There is nothing that can destroy a past good deed or gift when the person turns around at a later day to exclaim "well after all that I have done for you/given you". Whatever they gave or did it certainly wasn't a gift.
Gift's don't have to be purchases either. Some of my favourite are things that just can't be bought
A hug from someone you love
Laughter shared with friends
A walk in nature, watching a sunset/sunrise or swimming in the river or sea
Dancing and singing out loud to your favourite song
Other gifts don't have to cost that much either
A get together with wonderful people, sharing delicious food and interesting conversations
Homemade baking or other goodies
Receiving a free coffee because a random stranger has already paid for it
Donation to a charity
A plant or seedlings for their garden
I'm not suggesting that purchased gifts aren't capable of triggering joy - they definitely can - rather a reminder to ourselves that its not just limited to purchases or grand things.
So this week keep your eyes out to recognise those wonderful gifts we receive each and everyday. Think about how we can spread a little kindness in another's day and ensure we also we also give ourselves the gift of care - by moving, nourishing, hydrating and resting. As beautifully share by Dr Hinemoa Elder in her book Aroha
Poipoia te kākano kia puāwai - Nuture the seed and it will bloom
Take care e hoa - you are worthy, always
